Judge dismisses suit against cigarette companies in deadly Ky. fire

A federal judge has dismissed a lawsuit accusing cigarette giant Phillip Morris, another cigarette company and a furniture company of negligence in a central Kentucky house fire that killed 10 people.
U.S. District Judge Charles Simpson ruled Tuesday that the families of the deceased could not prove any of the allegations made against Phillip Morris, cigarette maker Altria Group or Jackson Furniture Industries of Cleveland, Tenn.
The Feb. 6, 2007 blaze in Bardstown killed Sherry Lynn Maddox, 47, who rented the home, along with members of her extended family.
The fire was the state's deadliest since the Beverly Hills Supper Club blaze in northern Kentucky killed 165 people in 1977. |

As the legislative session begins, a report released today by a tobacco policy expert at the University of Illinois at Chicago confirms that a significant cigarette tax increase in North Carolina will produce a large, sustained increase in state tobacco tax revenues. Several states, including South Carolina, have recently raised tobacco taxes to deal with budget shortfalls.
