EU court advisor questions ban on oral tobacco7 September 2004 12 18 Source »»»Oral tobacco is known as snus and currently only sold in EU member Sweden, mainly by the company Swedish Match The EU banned the sale of snus in 1992 on health grounds, but Sweden managed to negotiate an exception to the ban when it joined the union in 1995. In a legal opinion, the advocate general suggested that the ban on tobacco for oral use was void for lack of reasoning, but its legal effects remain in force until the Council of EU ministers and the European Parliament adopt a new, correctly reasoned provision.
