Warnings on packs of cigarettes 'mislead'
8 October 2004     15 42   Source »»»

Tar delivery levels are included on every packet of cigarettes as a legal requirement in almost every country, along with nicotine and often carbon monoxide.

But experts from the International Agency for Research on Cancer in France said such labels should be scrapped.

Instead they called for some form of measurement for regulatory purposes, but not for cigarette packets.

The researchers Nigel Gray and Peter Boyle said the measurements were misleading because human smoking patterns varied and were not mimicked by the machine.

Writing in the British Medical Journal, they also said the design of cigarettes encouraged over-inhalation.

The experts said the tobacco industry had modified cigarette design, making the modern cigarette just as dangerous as its predecessor, despite lowering tar delivery.
